In the aftermath of the first elections in the former African colony, hopes were high for change that would empower the black majority. However, the day after the elections, the winning party took unexpected measures: they abolished the recent Constitution, suspended civil rights, and declared a state of siege.

Years of oppression and ethnic tension gave way to a period of intense reprisals. The historically protected white districts faced violence, with homes being looted and those unable to escape taken into custody.

The international community responded with silence, leaving the poverty-stricken country without legal mechanisms to maintain order. In this vacuum, citizens began to create their own systems of justice.

The People’s Tribunals, which had authority over the white minority, imposed harsh sentences, including long-term labor or severe penalties.

This story focuses on the prison established by the new regime for the thousands of white female prisoners, a unique facility reflecting the complex dynamics of the country’s transition.
